Busy > Bored

Sorry folks, this week is going to be slow on the blog, and I am having a tough time getting to my email if you have sent me some. I have a big lighting design project to finish, taken as a favor to a friend in need, and it seems that last weekend and this coming one have been jam-packed with stuff going on. So my time where I’d normally write about stuff and answer my email… poof! Gone. You know what, though? I’d rather be busy than bored. Okay, maybe a little less busy. 🙂

Site Bug Fixes

My spare time today has been spent chasing down problems with my WordPress theme. Ugh. I remember why I don’t redo the theme very often. Thanks to Coeus for the suggestion that I add a “Comments” link at the bottom of an article. Done! The links to the feeds aren’t broken anymore. I’m a dummy and pasted PHP into the widgets. Oops. The archive pages display content, especially links, correctly now. That was kind of a bummer for the del.icio.us posts, and a bug in the original theme. I fixed the site search box, so people (namely me) can search for content here. Nothing sucks more than when I’m looking for my panang recipe and cannot find it. Finally, I …

New Look, Same Great Taste

Some of you have noted already I’ve changed the theme of this site. Don’t be alarmed, I’m not happy with it yet, either! 🙂 The things I wanted out of a new theme: good blockquote and code tag handling. The old theme didn’t do them right, which sucks when you’re a sysadmin. 🙂 better readability. The old theme was gray on white, I wanted to go more black & white, higher contrast. I want the visually impaired friends of mine to be able to read my blog more easily. 100% widget compatible. Widgets are cool. a decent layout where I can experiment with ads. Most of my readers come in via a feed, but I get a lot of Google …

.forward file is group writable…

Okay folks, I just discovered that I broke my the email forward that was giving me my lonesysadmin.net email (I hadn’t chmoded my .forward file to 600). So now that I’ve found it I can comment on your comments! Normally I’d reply in email but I’m going to do it in public here, something different for a Friday afternoon. Jeff, about my IPMI how-to: I’m glad you found it useful. Sorry it hasn’t been updated recently, I have just figured out how to get Dell PowerEdge x950s to work right so hopefully that can get posted next week. Be careful about what you tell the server to do. Any “chassis off” commands seem to shut the BMC off, too, which …

im in ur svn upgradin ur blogz

Holy freaking crap, Batman, upgrading to WordPress 2.2 was ultra simple using Subversion, and the instructions in the Codex. In fact, being not an SVN n00b I cheated and ran: svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.2/ . on my production blog. Afterwards a quick “svn status” showed me I needed to nuke a few things in wp-includes and run “svn update”. In fact, I cheated there, too, removing the whole wp-includes directory and letting svn restore it. Freakin’ sweet. I was fully expecting to have to resort to my backup copy at some point here. I also noted that this will be my 512th blog post, a milestone only a dork could love. Go 2^9! Right up there with the photo of my …

Ack, Down

Hi everybody, Sorry if you found this site down, we had a few problems this afternoon that I couldn’t get to right away. Basically, the storage this site sits on went away for a while, which made the server quite unhappy. Several fscks later, we seem to be in business again. 🙂 Lessons learned: 1) don’t go have fun in places where there is no connectivity, for server hardware detects that and acts accordingly. 2) thank god for KVM over IP. …Bob

Feed Broke, Fixed

Ah, crap — the 2.1.3 upgrade I did nuked my .htaccess file, which in turn broke the feeds. If you’re reading this, cool. If not, well, I guess I’m talking to myself. 🙂 I guess this means I should monitor my RSS feed URLs, too. Didn’t think of that until now.

Hello Again

Well, hello there y’all. I’m sorry my writing has been lame lately. It’s been pretty darn busy around me. We’re a little understaffed at work, and I’ve been spending a lot of time doing lighting design work for community theater shows. Spring is wonderful, but it also means I can see all the stuff on the ground that I didn’t get to last year, so fixing that has been in competition for time, too. Anyhow, I just wanted to say thank you for sticking around. Thanks for all the comments, too, you guys. It’s awesome to know that people are out there, real humans reading this instead of search bots hammering this blog.

Writin'

Ah, my blog. I’ve kinda been out of it the last month or so, and for that I apologize. Lots of stuff going on in my life, including meeting a wonderful girl and doing lots of stuff with her, lots of work-related things (new big projects, which is great), and also doing some theater work. I am soooo behind in reading blogs, too. You can tell when I am because the blog stops getting del.icio.us auto-posts. I’ll be running the lights for the Strollers production of Hair at the Bartell Theatre in Madison, WI. If you’re in town, not buried under 20+ inches of snow, and want to see a good show (including a bunch of nudity) come see it. …
