Spam Count Going Up… Something Changed…

A big thanks to the VMware Communities folks for picking my virtualization feed up on Planet V12n. Anything I put in the “Virtualization” category will appear over there now, too. I can usually tell when something like this happens, because my per-day comment spam totals jump. Akismet rules.

VMware Referral Program

Some of you may have seen the VMware referral program pilot mentioned a few days ago on the VMTN Blog. You may have also seen the announcements that Fusion 1.1 is out. With all this news it’s a great time for me to announce that I’m part of the referral program pilot. If you are thinking about buying a copy of Workstation or Fusion please consider using my referral links. Not only are you getting excellent workstation virtualization products but you are also helping VMware test their referral program while helping me defray my hosting costs.   As always, thank you for reading, commenting, linking to me, and overall making it fun to write on this blog.

Your Customers Don't Care This Much

Ack, this post started out as one topic and turned into another. Sometimes I ramble like that, and sometimes I decide the ramble is better than the original post. I forgot to change the title, though, and by the time I realized it Google had already grabbed it. So to save a 404 error this is a placeholder. 🙂 You really want: “…and by l10O359 you mean 1|O0359.” 🙂

WordPress 2.3

I just upgraded to WordPress 2.3. While I was still at 2.2.3 I went through each plugin, upgrading each one as needed[0], and then used Subversion to upgrade WordPress (svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.3). Works great. Seems a lot faster now, too. I’m not quite sure how I’ll use tagging separately from categories yet, but I’m sure a reason will present itself sometime soon. [0] I only use four plugins, so this was easy. FeedBurner FeedSmith, Google XML Sitemaps, Popularity Contest, and Share This.

@%$&# Comment Spammers

I find it interesting that my post entitled “F’in Comment Spammers” is the #1 post targeted by comment spammers. Morons. In reading that old post I realize I’ve fallen way behind on my project to script the finding and killing of comment spammers. As I said, “not just a quick death, but a long, painful one involving cucumbers, grizzly bears, and sandstone. And not the nice cucumbers, either, but the homegrown ones with all the little spiky things on them.” I still feel that way, though I may replace the sandstone with sporks.

CIHost Sucks and I Need Another Host

If you’re thinking about hosting with CIHost: don’t. Not colocation, not hosted services, nothing. Their Chicago data center has been completely offline all yesterday, and their ETA for resolution is basically indefinite now. Every hour it moves another hour out. This began yesterday as a mysterious power outage. Right now I suspect won’t be resolved until I go get my server, dispute the credit card charge to get my money back, and find a new colocation facility. This is the worst outage yet, but every couple of months the data center loses power, the network dies, etc. Lame but tolerable, until now. Now it looks like this is a lame way of saying “going out of business.” Or, maybe I’ll …

Even Sysadmin Blogs Have Outages

Apparently the colocation provider I’m with is having some router trouble… Sorry for the sporadic ups and downs today (or constant downs, more like it). In the “do as I say, not as I do” category I took the opportunity to change my DNS hosting back to GoDaddy’s servers, too[0]. Normally I wouldn’t think of changing something during an outage but since my TTLs were an hour anyhow it seemed to be a good opportunity. I would hate to deprive someone of their Lone Sysadmin news feed. 🙂 Thanks all! I haven’t said it recently but thanks for reading, commenting, and generally keeping me on my toes. FeedBurner tells me there are more of you out there now, and I …

10 Seconds to WordPress 2.2.2

And once again, I upgraded WordPress in ten seconds with: $ svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.2.2 w00t. Subversion access to these projects is so nice.

Quote Flood

Oops, I just realized I’d “parked” a number of quote posts on 7/30/2007. I do that sometimes when I find a lot of quotes I think might be fun to post, but want to wait until they are more relevant to recent topics. Apparently today is 7/30. Oops. Heh. I’m always looking for good non-sysadmin-but-relevant-to-sysadmin quotes. Know any? Leave them in the comments!

FeedBurner

Hey all, now that FeedBurner is free I am going to check it out by installing the feed redirection plugin. You shouldn’t have to do anything on your end, but I’m posting this just in case something goes sideways. Drop me a line if I broke something and didn’t catch it. Not that you’d know, since you’re probably reading this via the feed. 🙂
