Okay, okay, I was going to make a comment but I thought a followup full post was a better idea. Jesse Grosjean and xen0cide had good comments, but I’ve been getting some, um, interesting hate email. I don’t have a lot of time to comment right now, but here’s what I’ve got:
First, please stop sending me idiotic email. I don’t hate Macs, and I enjoy rational commentary as comments to the post. I think I mentioned there are two excellent ones in the post already, use them as examples.
Second, I think it’s cool that Jesse/Hog Bay Software are cool with the duplication. Hopefully he can pull some good ideas back from the other clones.
Third, xen0cide, I wouldn’t wish vi on anybody. Icky icky icky.
Fourth, I know lots of people aren’t CLI junkies, but it seems like all the people that I hear about *room from are. And it always puzzled me.

Bob, I’m very sorry your getting hate mail from this, and hey WriteRoom fans… please please please DO NOT send out hate mail what someone says they think WriteRoom isn’t all that great.
It’s really useful what you respond and say “well it works great for me, and this is why…”. But hate mail is really irritating and doesn’t help me, and doesn’t help the original poster understand that yes WriteRoom can be useful for some people.
From what I can tell the vast majority of people who say that WriteRoom isn’t that interesting aren’t trying to really be mean, they just don’t get what all the fuss is about. And in fact for them WriteRoom (even once they understand it) might not be very useful. WriteRoom fills a niche and if your needs are in that niche then it’s really great, if not then WriteRoom can look a bit hyped.
Anyway, Bob, thanks very much for your response, and to everyone else. Please be nice!
