Firewall settings for a VMware View environment (That’s my View – Christoph Harding)
I love docs like this — exactly what I need for my new VDI environment. -
3 Free E-Books on Java for Beginners
Very cool — it’s been a long time since I’ve done any non-Perl, non-PHP programming and I sort of miss it. Never did a lot with Java, I was mainly a Windows C/C++ developer. -
This is the sort of thing that is considered “gross negligence” and makes people personally liable in lawsuits. It’s got nothing to do with the cloud, and everything to do with terrible architecture.

I think the correct answer to a request to examine a cell phone is “do you have a warrant to search it?”

I really need a new bag for my D7000, I think I’m going to try for one of those Kibokos. Expensive, but I see it as something I’ll have for 10 years, so that’s $40 a year.

I’m printing this out and keeping a copy in my camera bag.

I like companies with actual data about stuff, because you get posts like this. Personally, I see the Uber guys as a replacement for a rental car when I’m in SF, especially if I have bags or equipment (which are annoying on MUNI) and need to be to places in a predictable amount of time. It’ll also be good for the times where I’m drinking in the Haight or somewhere else non-touristy and want to get back to where I’m staying and get some sleep. Walking half way across the city because you can’t get a cab to pick you up at 2 AM sucks.

This is a cool storage calculator. Saw it on Twitter, perhaps from @standalonesa.

Marco Arment reaches the same conclusions I did about the opening of Facebook’s data center design, namely that their data center design doesn’t provide them significant competitive advantage. He takes it a step further, though: “With this move, I think Facebook is telling the geek world that they’re just as big and serious of a tech company as Google, and if you want to work on large-scale, interesting engineering challenges that affect hundreds of millions of people, you should work at Facebook.”

ACLU has handy “bust cards” that apply to photography, too.. (WI: http://www.aclu-wi.org/demonstators_guide.pdf)
Talk to me before you buy a new bag, I’ve had lots. If you want a Lowepro Slingshot 300, you can have one. 🙂 I’m lusting for thinktank currently (http://www.thinktankphoto.com/products/retrospective-5-pinestone.aspx)
Agree on Java, I’ve always said I love the language, but it’s always suffered from poor implementations.
