This is a really good interview with Luke Kanies. I agree with a lot of what he's saying. We aren't using Puppet right now, we're using all the tools he mentions as being inadequate. The next iteration of our Linux operating environments will use something like Puppet to keep everything in sync, to keep everything maintained, etc.

I’ve had a couple of people suggest using puppet, too. I thought the initial learning curve was higher than what the author suggests, but even if the learning curve was analogous to notepad, I still haven’t had time yet.
At some point in the next few months, it should slow down and I’ll start working on it. I can definitely see how it would be helpful, but all the same, I’m still a little skeptical about the layers of abstraction between my commands and the actual implementation.
I spent the time to get Puppet going for a web cluster I’m running, and it’s been a total life-saver!
The learning curve is a bit steeper than I expected, but I wouldn’t go back now. And there are of course going to be bugs and problems, but it works more than well enough that I don’t have to worry about updating a whole slew of machines 🙂
