For posterity, if your Dell firmware updater keeps telling you:
An Update Package is already running.
Wait until it is complete before proceeding with another update.
it’s /var/lock/.spsetup.

I usually find out this stuff when I start the offending application as ‘strace appname’. That’ll usually show what it’s doing before the error message is printed.
How did you find it out?
I don’t even remember anymore, but I suspect it was strace. I do that a lot, too.
