iTunes Does Not Work On Windows Vista

Dec. 12, 2007: I just replaced my ATI graphics card with an inexpensive NVidia 8500GT, updated the drivers, and installed the latest DirectX, and that resolved most of my problems. Your mileage may vary.

Update: iTunes 7.1 has been released, but does not appears to fix the UI crashing problems.

Update 2: None of the iTunes releases, including 7.3, have improved the crashing of iTunes.

But, if you want to read the rest of this, feel free:

The CD-RW driver in iTunes doesn’t appear to work right, so trying to burn anything will result in an instant crash. Also, letting iTunes stay open for more than about a minute results in Aero freaking out.

Microsoft Windows Vista is not supported by Apple, so I guess I’m stuck now. I mean, Apple only had a couple years of Vista betas to get this working, apparently that’s not enough time. Just more proof that I need to get away from iTunes and the restrictive DRM.

you say that apple doesnt support vista why did you upgrade? seems like you are the idiot here. Get a mac and shut up haha at least quit complaining

You’re right, I made a poor assumption that the majority of my applications would work right under Vista. It’s just a matter of time, though, before they fix iTunes. I was hoping that with such a high-profile application that they would have fixed it already.

That aside, I may be an idiot but at least I have mastered punctuation and capitalization. Thanks for teh commentz haha get a clue.

I am also haveing a Vista/Itunes problem. Itunes says that my purchased music is not playable on this machine because the computer is not authorized. But, it is…and when I try to authorize it again, I get another error. Itunes is the ONLY problem I am having. Help!!

If ONLY I could reload iTunes 7 onto Vista.

I’ve just installed Vista on a fairly new desktop. So far, I can’t download ANYTHING (including any of the updates I need to make things like Citrix work on my machine). Downloads appear to be processing and then they simply vanish from the computer at the end of the down load.

As for iTunes, the problem is that it won’t permit me to play any ITMS purchased items because it won’t allow the computer to store my authorization. (In the course of trying to get this to work, it also caused me to “reauthorize” my purchases twice with ITMS, thereby using up my fifth and final authorized computerfor ITMS purchases.) I feel comfortable that reloading Itunes will solve this probem, except for that little downloading glitch.

This, in addition to the fact that I can’t open or store any attachments received on Microsoft Mail (yes, I’ve de-checked the box for screening out potentially dangerous attachments), is making me insane.

    Any suggestions?

My itunes wont transfer music to my ipod. It just freezes and says it cant communicate with the device.

  7. By Bob on Feb 5, 2007 | Reply

    Okay, some thoughts:

    1) You can have all five iTMS authorizations deactivated once a year at the Apple web site.

    2) Downloading and storing files works for me. Perhaps you are storing your downloads in a strange directory? I usually have a “Downloads” folder on my desktop, but on a fresh install I usually forget to change the defaults in Firefox to that.

    3) My only suggestion at this point for iTunes is to wait until the next version, which Apple says will address some of the compatibility issues.

I got an iPod Shuffle and I got windows Vista. And I got about 55 songs onto to it, when it stopped and said, “The ipod Bianca Calore can not be updated. Unknown error.” I tried running the program as as an administrator, but it still won’t work. I’m very stressed an upset. What should I do?

  11. By Tony B on Feb 19, 2007 | Reply

To those who complain, you should wait… Vista is a NEW OS. If you can use a XP based OS use that for your machine until vista is officially supported. Like a few I updated my OS form windows 98 to windows XP along with a machine at the same time. Now I have an XP machine along with a vista machine. Each, yes I’m lucky and have 3 computers, one with XP (very old) with a craped out hard drive, one with XP SP2, and vista.
The vista machine is on hold, until things
improve with applications such as Itunes, still
Then I’ll use XP for such applications until
vista supports it fully. DRM - well….

Some people in the “know” have said apples system is superior- even though they are windows users themselves… I bet even now apples OS system users are laughing at those using vista.
I guess it’s all a licensing issue in reality, just imagine over lunch Bill gates and Steve Jobs having lunch developing their OS systems… If only they got along better. What a treat it will be in the future when it all integrates and works smoothly- ie an OS rather than a XP OS, or Apple OS or a Linux OS. Just an OS that works how you want it to in the first place. After all it’s just an Operating system in the first place, and should do what ever it needs to without all the frigging around to get it to work!

It seems that I am not the only one experiencing problems with I-tunes and Windows Vista. I have tried to install I-tunes more than 3 times and my computer keeps stating that I-tunes has stopped working. It is really frustrating and I hope the problem gets fixed as soon as possible so that I may listen to my music. Maybe more time should have been taken, when Windows Vista was being created. These compatibility issues make a person want to go back to Windows XP operating system.

I was having numerous problems with itunes working on my new PC running Vista. We could not download purchased songs and it would freeze up, etc. We were using McAfee virus protection that came with the machine. We decided to remove McAfee and try Window Live OneCare. Immediately itunes began working correctly and have had no more problems. If your running McAfee this could be your problem too!!

Apparently there is a patch on the Microsoft web site that might help (I just wish they had put it under Windows Update!) Its KB933824

One other thing I tried (along with the Windows patch) after rebooting from an iTunes/Vista blue screen was to look at the application event viewer (Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer). It didn’t say iTunes but QuickTime.

I removed Quicktime and then ran iTunes setup again (choosing Repair) which put Quicktime back in. The next time I rebooted and synced, it didn’t crash. It had crashed twice previously trying to sync the same files.

I use mac 10.3.9 and there were itunes issues with that too….the folks at the mac store had to rebuild my library so anyone that has things freeze when the library is ‘updating’….this could fix your problem….rebuilding your library will cause your playlists to be gone but your music files should be safe…I usually back those up out of paranoia anyway….

What you need to do is go to apple.com and download quicktime. When doing this make sure that you select JUST QUICKTIME, not itunes + quicktime.

Install quicktime from there and you are good to go!

OK, i had to get a new laptop with windows Vista. Everything was working fine untill I-tunes. First I had trouble getting music from my i-pod and it was also saved on a harddrive (which crashed everytime I tried to put music on). But I got that fixed and am able to download new music and everything. The only trouble I have is when I plug in my I-pod. My whole computer crashes everytime! Its so annoying. I have no songs on my i-pod anymore because I tried restoring it but that didn’t help my problem. So now I have an empty I-pod, but full Library on I-tunes. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it An I-tunes problem?

    Hi all,
I ran successfully Itunes for a while over Ultimate Edition.
Then ITunes start crashing at each startup.
To make it short, I had uninstalled Quicktime with the Program and features Control Panel Tools.
To make ITunes able to run again, I had to install over ITunes install (Never asked me anything about missing Quicktime…), the QuickTimeInstaller standalone.
It seems to be a major bug in Apple installation program and in ITunes application. If a component is missing, say about it to the user ! That is an incorrect unhandled exception as correctly reported by Vista OS.
    Regards.

I had the same problem with Vista Home Premium but it now seems to be working fine. There are 2 things you need to do.

    1. Make sure you have iTunes 7.1.1.5 installed - nothing earlier

    2. Install a patch from Microsoft (KB936824)

It turned out that Quicktime had not installed properly following the initial freeze, and was not being reinstalled, because the itunes installer thought it was still there. I ran the Apple update program, and it suggested I install Quicktime. I did so, and it seems to be working ok now.

I had tried quicktime alternative 1.81 lite before, but uninstalled it and (I believe) all entries, as in the programs folders.

I need to work on projects. Someone please help me TRY to find a way for quicktime to work. Open to all suggestions. Anyone with Vista Home Premium, install the latest quicktime 7.2. I have a new quad core PC with 3 GB RAM, a RAID 0 HDD array, and deep expertise in Windows. I am completely confident that this is 100% not my fault. Is iTunes logo’d for Windows? Ensure your iTunes is loaded and turn on your iPod before connecting the USB cable, you should be problem free. I’d also recommend looking up Anapod explorer if you want to transfer media *from* your iPod. iTunes has it’s problems, but is just so necessary for iPod users imo.

Manny, I have been able to download and run itunes and have no problems with my iPOD so far. (see my post dated August 3 for specs) I downloaded the latest version of Quicktime by itself before I downloaded iTunes 7.3.2. Also you need to check in you windows update files and make sure that KB936824 has been downloaded. If not then get it. It fixes the eject problem if you eject from the windows task bar (apple recomends always eject from iTunes) maybe this will help you. I have had no problems thus far and I have put nearly 3 gig of music and podcasts on.

I was forced to replace my laptop & only windows vista was offered. Itunes works fine on my system UNTIL . . . I try to burn a cd or restart my computer. Then my cd/dvd disappears. If I uninstall itunes the cd/dvd returns & functions perfectly. I have tried reinstallin itunes about 7 times with & without firewalls/antivirus etc. Everytime with the same results. The people at apple have not offered any help or solution. In fact, they gave me the run-around because my ipod is out of warranty. They suck!

I have Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS 410 with a RAID 1 array. I installed iTunes 7.3 and it crashed my system by corrupting one of the RAID HD on two different times. The first time I had to send the Dell back but the second time I was able to rebuild the corrupted HD.

I have installed the latest Intel Matrix drivers and also the latest BIOS but am afraid to install iTunes 7.3.2 (the latest version) and/or Quicktime 7.2 because of another HD array corruption. Anybody had any luck with this configuration? I wouldn’t really care about this except I own an iPhone and you need iTunes to sync it (which I’m currently doing on my Sony VAIO laptop with XP).

I just recently got a new laptop and now a new ipod nano. I was really excited to get a new laptop and hopefully to have itunes working with no problems since my last computer (running xp) was definitely not reliable! sometimes it opened, sometimes it didn’t and sometimes, it took 10 minutes to open! So i upgraded my computer and OS. My laptop has vista premium and I realized when I bought it it had compatibility problems but I really thought itunes would at least work! Well, like 99.9% of you on here, guess what? itunes wont work!! When I install it, it opens and works great but when I close it, it will not, for the life of me, open again! I’ve tried everything! uninstalling, re-installing, changing compatibility mode using properties, I’ve tried uninstalling quick-time and reinstalling it from the apple website and running itunes, and nothing seems to be working! I’m soo tired of itunes but I really like it and want it to work. I’ve been trying for a long time and I really don’t want to have to be uninstalling and reinstalling itunes every time I want to listen or sync my music to my ipod! Does anybody have any other suggestions that I could try…I’m not giving up! I just wish Apple would put their act together and come up with a decent itunes program that works for all!! Somebody help me!

  98. By Ger F on Sep 12, 2007 | Reply

No only does itunes 7.4 not solve the burner recognition problem when attempting to burn a CD on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate HP Pavillion, but when clicking on the itunes icon, a box states that itunes was not installed properly (tried three times including the repair of both itunes and quicktime from control panal). However when clicking “OK” icon on the box, itunes boots up, tells me it is version 7.41 but still does not recognize the cd burner.

From the previous comments, seems like Apple and MS could have coordinated their programs sometime within the last nine months since Vista has been out.

Am I right or am I missing something?

Why can’t Apple, knowing that 90% of the computers on the planet are running Windows, come up with software that actually works with Windows?

Does Apple think that, because their latest version of iTunes doesn’t work with Vista that I will decide to go out and buy a Mac?

I’m not a big Microsoft supporter, but other vendors have managed to update their software to work with Windows, so why can’t Apple?

I recently purchased a new computer that came with Vista by default. All the other software managed to convert and upgrade just fine. iTunes is the only software that consistently locks up my PC.

Based on this experience, I certainly don’t plan on buying another Apple product until they get their act together.

I just installed Vista and reinstalled iTunes and copied all of my movies and songs over. Now that I have the songs working, some of the movies don’t. For example, I can play a few episodes from Quantum Leap, and others don’t play or transfer to my iPod. If I delete them from iTunes, I try to add them back again and they won’t add. If you right click on the file and choose “get Info”, the movies taht work have 2 colums, and the ones that don’t work have only one (listing from “kind” to “last played”. It’s wierd that some work and others don’t, when some of these discs were ripped at the same time. Everything was fine with XP. Oh, one other thing. If I put the backed up disc in my drive and add the file to iTunes and direct to the drive, it works. If I move the backed up file to my desktop and add it, it doesn’t work. Any ideas out there?

Well its one week on, no-one was able to give me a reason to keep Vista so when I bought my laptop the first thing I did was downgrade to XP. I had bought a copy for my old PC in the UK (£65) but even out here in the UAE everyone is running XP so the IT guy at work lent me a copy! It loaded straight on with the exception of a couple of minor driver issues which were easy to resolve at the Toshiba website’s driver download area (make life even easier for yourself by downloading all the drivers listed for your PC/laptop and save them onto a disc or USB pen). So my conclusion remains the same - if you’re buying a new PC, LOSE VISTA and stick with XP!!! If you’re buying direct (eg Dell) you can often get this done free of charge before the unit is delivered, or you can very easily do it yourself.

Vista is a bit like a model bimbo - great to look at but not much cop . . . :0)

problem is definitely quicktime.qts file - it seems it has had problems in every version since 2005, either buggy or security issues. I suppose apple will get around to fixing sometime.
Uninstalled latest (7.5) itunes and quicktime, renamed old itunes folder as it contained my music. Downloaded old itunes installer from Apple support (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/index9.html) - version 4.7.1, installed that, remapped it to music files and everything working. Version 6 is also available for download, but I’m not even going to attempt that while V4 works. You might have to run itunes.exe and quicktime.exe V4 in XP compatibility mode. Slight problem on ipod eject - Vista ipod service crashes, but i think ther’s a microsoft fix out there for this. Doesnt really matter as service restarts when you plug ipod back in. As an Aussie used to our national telcos appalling levels of service, it amazed me to find Apple even worse…a disgrace.

Itunes does work on Windows Vista. I am presently running the 64 bit version of Vista with Raid 5 and I have no issues.

There are several Microsoft Patches that are included with the new Vista SP1 that Maximum PC points out where you can download them from.

According to Apple if you install Itunes with Raid 5 and run your music on Itunes from the Raid drive you will corrupt the drive. You need to relocate your music to a spare non Raid drive in order to not crash your machine.

    Hope this helps!

I don’t just blame Apple for this one, I blame Microsoft first. I have been running Vistaster since RC1 and initially I did have some iTunes problems. Microsoft always said to upgrade to the next version to fix it.

At some point suddenly iTunes worked perfectly for me, graphics, visualizers in resizeable windows, and no crashes. And then one day, like so many other things in Vista, it just started crashing. Ever since then it crashes EVERY SINGLE TIME I exit the program, and every single time the Vistaster error helper comes up and says that there is a new version of iTunes and that will fix the problem, but it is just not true. I have written MS repeatedly about it but I don’t think they WANT to fix it, since it competes with them.

This week Vistaster killed all my print settings and now no matter what it will not let me re-add my color laser printer. I am about ready to wipe it clean and swear to never touch Vista again.

    Tony,

You most likely belive in world piece also. A laudable goal but not likely to happen.

An OS is a very complex machine that depends on the hardware platform ir runs on. There are no universal OS programs that exist today. You can load VMware and then load all the OS programs you want. You can pick and choose the poison of the day depending on your mood or application. I think that is the closest you are going to get.

I have been writing and designing OS modules, drivers and interrupt routines since 1966. I haven’t seen anything yet that will do all things correctly on multiple platforms.

ONLY download that! I-pod works fine now - only problem is I couln’t save ALL my films in one go as the computer was freezing, so i had to reboot. However, there is a way around this - manually since your films but only do 2 at a time NOT all of them! Can’t believe it finally works. Hi,

I have some serious iPod issues and would be most grateful if someone could please help me out. I’m using the latest iTunes.

It started off that whenever I connected my iPod to my PC, I got a Windows message popping up asking if I wanted to “Scan and Fix”. At this time, removing the iPod was difficult and the only way to do so was selecting “Safely Remove in Explorer”.

I uninstalled the driver and let Windows do its thing of detecting new hardware, and that problem seemed to go away for a while, but then the iPod could not be seen in iTunes when connected. By switching to another USB port (i.e. not the one on my new PCI card, but one on the motherboard), the iPod appeared in iTunes.

I eventually got it to restore, and left it to sync overnight. When I checked it this morning, the computer was stuck in Power Save (screen was black, and ended up having to shut it down). Also noticed the iPod had gone off (battery icon still seemed full). Have noticed on the iPod that only 13 songs out of around 5000 have synched.

Over the last few days, have tried just about everything including a full clean reinstall of Vista. Also tried formatting the iPod in Vista Explorer (NTFS), which just hung, so I had to cancel that.

So here are my questions for which I’m seeking answers:

    1. Why did it initially say “Scan and Fix” every time I connected it?
    2. Is there a specific driver in Vista that the iPod must use – think the one in use is USB 2 Mass Storage.
    3. Why did it stick in Power Save and only sync 13 songs?
    4. How can I resolve my tracks cutting short issue?
    5. Is this all something to do with Vista, should I make my PC dual boot and only use iTunes in XP? (Bought the iPod in October 2006 and until around December 2007 had no problems – initially migrated to Vista in March 2007).
    6. Is there a reason why the iPod can’t be seen on a PCI USB card?
    7. Should iPod appear in Windows Explorer as a drive even when not in disk mode?

I have tried all the reset stuff, but still no joy!

Many thanks in advance for your help!
    Cheers,
    Neil

Wtf?? I can download and install iTunes 7.6 onto my Windows Vista pc, but it tells me ” a problem caused the program to stop working properly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available”.

Having the same problem here as SARAH. Ugh.

I’m also experiencing the same problems as SARAH. I’m on a Dell Vostro 200, running Vista Home Premium, with both an administrator and user account set up. iTunes 7.6 runs OK in the user acct, but when I try to open it in the administrator acct, I also get the message “a problem caused the program to stop working properly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available”. Any suggestions to correct this would be greatly appreciated.

Mine hasn’t crashed yet, (that I can think of,) On my lappy, (2gig RAM dual core T7250 and nvidia8600m gt.) But it is painfully slow and it has asked to authorised again, even though i’ve done it before. Wierd, though it hasn’t counted it a second time.

Ipod and Itunes completely suck on Vista. Everything that is described above since Feb 07 has happened to me. It just sucks. How long does it take for Apple to get this right? It’s been over a year since Vista was issued and over a year since the first complaint on this board. Makes one wonder about who actually IS the “Evil Empire”.

Windows Vista does not see my Ipod, Itunes however does, But it says that my Ipod needs to be restored. Even though it is brand new.
What can I do to solve this problem short of uninstalling Vista?

I have been trying to figure out this problem since Feb 07. My new Gateway Windows Vista laptop seemed to work ok until I loaded itunes. For some reason, it disables my CD Rom drive. So, I can BUY music and have it synced to Ipod, but I cannot use the CD Rom drive to transfer music from all of my CD’s. When I uninstall itunes, my Media Player won’t recognize my Ipod as an MP3 player and won’t let me transfer music either???? So, my new Ipod is useless with this computer.OR, maybe this computer is crap…now when I even try to BURN a CD, it crashes! I can’t seem to get ahold of anyone who can fix this.

itunes suddenly wants to run the setup wizard each time I start itunes. If I click cancel it goes into Itunes. However it also loses all my settings such as “keep files organized” and so I continually have to re-consolidate my library. Last time it did this to me on XP (I’m on vista now on my second new computer) it started deleting my music files, much to my chagrin. Then my ipod froze and I had to go through a lot of hoops to restore it - the typical press-and-hold-the buttons did not work and the computer and itunes woudl not see the ipod at all. So that was fun.

Itunes horribleness and ipod’s unreliableness is the reason why I won’t pay a premium price for a slick-looking packaging. I rather suspect a bunch of junk is under the hood. Because it similarly won’t play video on it. I find it’s just horrible software - but its positives and negatives seem to be like the inverse of windows vista - but both end up with the same result - unstable and unreliable.

Yes I’m sure the mac advocates will bounce around. I was a staunch mac advocate for years when they first came out int he 80s and had them for many years. Then I realized that both PCs and Macs are a bunch of junk so I may as well just buy the cheaper one as the lesser of two evils

I am having the same problem as posted above.
I have a brand new gateway with Vista on it and when I downloaded itunes it worked great except that it disabled the cdrom. I only got the cdrom going again by deleting itunes. so now I’m stuck.

    I have the same issue:
    vista ultimate x64
when i try to authenticate to the Itunes store itunes stops working.
Now, when I try to authenticate to my VNC server via the web interface (java) firefox and IE stop working!!!

Could there be some kind of authentication issue with vista?
