We were tasked with a project of automating monitoring of ~60 servers of different makes and generations for failures. The goal was to instantly know if a part failed, then wake someone up to replace the redundant, but failed, part. We never found a tool that actually worked. The solution was to walk the datacenter twice a day and look for hardware fault lights. Software isn't at the level of reliablity as a human eye. Sounds very familiar.
